2008 - 51 episodes

The Grim Reaper roams the lands with his scythe, collecting all the due death candidates. That simple. No, it is not that simple. It starts with the scythe being a humanlike being, transforming to a scythe when needed. He (in this case a man) was qualified to be the Grim Reaper's scythe, because a weapon master in training together with him at the Grim Reaper's school in Death City took care of 99 evil souls and (Important!) one witch's soul according to the rules. Right now the most promising follow-up candidates are: Scythe's talented daughter Maka teaming with cool-acting apprentice scythe Soul, Death's very own son with his two revolvers called Thompson Twins, and attention-addicted hooligan Black Star together with the kind-hearted all-purpose weapon Tsubaki. Maka and Soul were almost there, but instead of the final witch's soul got a conjuring cat and thus have to start all over. Black Star is more busy moving himself into the spotlight than getting the job done, and Death junior totally looses it if something is not entirely symmetrical ... including the perhaps not properly folded toilet paper at home. Death's current scythe just hits an all-time low, as Makas Mother is divorcing him and Maka doesn't like him, too. That Death himself still gives a pretty relaxed impression facing the whole situation ... is astonishing.
Soul Eater lives on its originally developed characters and their interactions. The presentation doesn't fall behind that, and the winkingly as sometimes gorily told story knows how to inspire, too. Top.
