The world is left only partly intact after a devastating war. A Switzerland somehow under japanese influence called the Republic of Helvetia and the somehow resurrected Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation are holding long-winded peace talks, which are not going so well despite the consequence of failure is right in front of everybody's eyes: the bordering uninhabitable wasteland. Young soldieress and prospective signal bugler Kanata is being transferred to the small town of Seize at the end of the inhabitable world, the local fortress is held by a bunch of young girl soldiers under the command of the motherly veteran Filicia Heidemann. The series is about the past, the daily routine and the adventures of this quasi family as well as Kanata's integration into it and her musical progress. Naturally, however, one isn't a soldier for nothing, so the military situation is about to escalate near the remote Seize, of all places.
Sora No Woto doesn't make many mistakes and doesn't hurt anybody. The interesting plot and the sympathetic character ensemble easily carry the weight, the production values are up to date.
