Latest anime updatesNew: Kaichou Wa Maid-sama! New: Giant Killing New: Heroman New: The Tatami Galaxy New: Katanagatari New: Sora No Woto Completed: Tatakau Shisho - The Book Of Bantorra New: Durarara! ... More news ... Now, what is this all about?People watching anime (japanese cartoon movies and series), usually don't have it so very easy. Outside of Japan two basic prejudices concerning anime can be experienced: Either anime are just for kids, because they're cartoon, or anime are sex and violence only. The first prejudice bases heavily on American cartoon productions, which for decades now mainly targeted children as their audience. The second prejudice probably is caused by the media in most cases having chosen examples fitting to the prejudice for their coverage during the past years concerning anime. So who actually wonders about a perhaps false impression? Exactly. In the western hemisphere cartoon is seen as a TV or movie category of itself, whereas in Japan cartoon is seen as a production alternative to real actors and places. Every target audience and every category is being covered. There are anime for kids, for teens and for grown-ups, everything you know from TV and cinema can be found: science fiction, action, comedy, thriller, drama etc. Of course there are anime explicitly produced for children, and of course there are anime dealing with sex and violence only. They are part of a huge spectrum. If you think about it, you'll find that with the selection of fitting examples similar prejudices may be constructed concerning the US movie industry for instance, and that would make as much sense as in the case of anime - none. If you pass the prejudice barrier, there's a large selection for you to find anime in that may appeal to you, amaze you, astound you, let you think, leave you wondering ... it only depends on what kind of topics you are or want to be into. Anime at their best are optically brilliant, soundtracks even for many TV series are produced in a way we over here only know from cinema releases ... and what about stories? Well ... often enough I'd wish Hollywood would have a closer look at the concepts, because in Japan you have a relatively large audience appreciating demanding story lines and intensively developed characters ... and then you have the art of drawing and animation for an additional thrill. I won't open up competition for extensive data bases (like e.g. Anime News Network and AnimeNfo) here. I'll only deal with what I've seen personally and I'll tell you what I think about it. I guess you're clever enough to use your favourite search engine(s) to find more and/or different info, opinions and pictures. It's surely worth to open up your eyes and ears towards anime ;-) ! |
